Sacred Commission: Women's Circles

Lake Michigan is cloud colored today--big sheets of ice are jigsawed together in the harbor and the snow keeps snowing. If the cold is good for anything it's getting work done in the studio! Yesterday was the first time I'd left the apartment in almost 3 days, can you say cabin fever? Wowza.
I spent the evening putting finishing touches on another commission piece. This was a total treat to make as I haven't had the chance to play with oil paints in quite awhile. They are such a sensual medium: very responsive to your brushes (and fingers), the have a very particular almost vinegary aroma and a sheen you just can't get with anything else. I also included little flecks of fuschia foil and a dash of sparkley nail polish to give it it a little extra glow. (I had difficulty photographing this piece and getting anything but glare.) As was requested by the masses, here is the finished product:
I was asked to create a dreamy circle of soul dancers gathering in a moonlit garden. I like to think they are enjoying themselves being watched by fireflies, purple stars and mother Moon. Lately, there has been a flurry of talk in the blogosphere about Women's Circles: creating them, attending them, reminiscing about them, dreaming about them, hopes for them. I've always been intrigued, even delighted by the idea but never had the opportunity to partake in one. I've been to book clubs, ladies only cocktail parties, Lady Vampire Balls and Knit'n'Bitch sessions but never to what I've come to understand is a Women's Circle. So I thought--well then why don't I hostess one? Then it occurred to me, I don't really know what it is.

Has anyone out there ever attended a women's circle? Do you want to attend one? What can I expect? What do I do? What do I bring? Does someone lead? Do you determine a theme for what you'll discuss in advance or is it more organic than that? If you have any experiences to share or ideas to add--I'd love to hear your thoughts!

I am so awed and inspired by your Women's Circle piece. I love it so much! (Would you mind if I print out a pic of it and use it in my art journaling?) It is such a celebration of women!

I don't know about Women's Circles...I'd love to attend one but I wouldn't know where to start in the planning of one.

Peace & Love,

Wow, that is a really gorgeous piece of art.

I've never attended a circle. I'm a solitary gal much of the time(Scorpio...? Solitary? No! Defiance of the planetary alignment!) But it seems that a friend of mine must have gotten involved in some when she had more time and I believe she loved it. It seems it was a place to cry and express her own story in a safe environment.

This piece breathes fairy dust! No wonder you couldn't get a good picture of it! The flash has nothing on the piece's ethereal glow!

Jamie Ridler would be the best person to ask as she is in the middle of conducting a women's circle Circe's Circle. Hope that helps :)

Oh what a gorgeous piece. Love all the light, the moon, the sparkling fireflies...

I've been in alot of women's circles, and even started and hosted a few. But the current expert extraordinaire I can think of is Goddess Leonie
http://www.goddessleonie.com/

She is currently just starting an online women's creativity and spirituality circle. I'm doing it, and she is amazing. Even if you don't do her circle, poke around her site and her blog, and you'll get alot of great inspiration. She's young yet wonderfully wise. ANd silly and funny too.

Ummm, I can't believe it took me this long to realize this, but we ARE IN a woman's circle here! The 12 secrets group is an online circle. I mean you could structure it more, and hold sacred space more tightly (and by that I mean a good thing) but it is all women, sharing their truth and spirits, honoring and supporting each other in sacred space (loosely speaking). Methinks that defines a woman's circle, the online version at least.

I love this painting. It so beautiful and luminous. Makes me want to dance with the ladies. I have never been to a circle either. I am intrigued about The Lady Vampire Ball you went to. There are some here in New York, I never went to one.

I'm guessing that from her comments the piece is for Jennlui? How did I so know that before I even read her comment? :) It is a feast for the eyes. I love it!

I have wanted to be in a Women's Circle for years and years. Tried to find some, but haven't been able to. So, I'm thrilled that Jennlui is starting an online one!! YAY!!

molly your piece takes my breath away ~ it's gorgeous! you are incredibly talented.

i would love to hear more about how you go about hosting a women's circle. are you planning to do it online, or in physical form? as lisa (kavindra) said, this online circle is wonderful and certainly, for me, fills a a certain void; but i would love to find a circle i could actually go to and meet women in person... so good luck on your endeavour and i look forward to reading more about it!

I too love the piece you shared - it's lovely and lively and full of 'glow'. Again, like someone else said its recipient is truly fortunate!

The idea of women's circles enraptures me. I've thought also about creating one in a sense, but have kind of thought it's the kind of thing that evolves mostly. I'd hoped for that to come from my book club - I think that's part of the reason book clubs have become so prevalent is that seeking of community and intimacy. Call me crazy, but I think when people read the same thing at the same time and communicate about it, it's a kind of intimacy akin to brain sex. Our group, while faithful and committed, are just too diverse I think in style. Some are voracious and have already read the next 6 months of book selections or dispense with them like chores instead of seeing the opportunity to commune with the others...

I don't know if it's even possible to 'create' such a thing - I think it's part chemistry, spontaneous combustion, whatever. I'll be interested though to see where/how you go with the concept though.

Gorgeous Molly! Totally perfect for a women's circle. I used to go to one, I would bring baked goods but some women were on diets and didn't like the temptation. Oh well, I brought them anyway, LOL. I miss my women's circle very much!

We've had snow for three months! Freezing rain today. I can't wait for spring.

Love the Green Day reference! Nice to know another fan and wow, you're a big fan! American Idiot is absolute genius. I love that they write about strong, rebellious women. I wish there were female bands doing that! I can't seem to find them.

OH, what a beautiful piece, Molly! I adore the colours!

I've never experienced a Women's Circle though I sure would love to. Even though I tend to be a bit of a loner, I think it would be lovely to interact with other women on a more spiritual and personal level.

I have found so many wonderful female friends through the blogging community and I feel so blessed in that.

I don't have a women's circle but witch class for my circle every Sunday. We are all women by accident not excluding men but we just haven't found any yet that aren't weird. : Anyways I pick a topic ahead of time and sometimes that means a craft to go with it and we have coffee and tea and a snack and then we of course meet for sabbats, and full and dark moons as well since we are a pagan circle but maybe a moon gathering to do tarot readings? Also there's the idea for journaling together and then sharing snippets of your writing or art together with a few candles on a special day? Just a few ideas. I am sure you will come up with something fabulous.

A Women's Circle? I have no idea what that is but it sounds so very delightful! I wanna join in!!
